Breed history
The French bulldog is a canine of the molosse family like the American bulldog. This relatively small dog turns out to be a descendant of the English bulldog which is a canine breed imported to France around the 1850s, especially after the prohibition of bullfights in the United Kingdom. This English bulldog was then crossed with a ratter from the suburbs of Paris to give birth to a new breed of dog: the French bulldog.
At the end of the 19th century, it was used to hunt unwanted rodents that lurked near butchers in the Villette and Halles districts of Paris. At the same time, this canine also served as a companion dog. During this time, these cheeky and fun little dogs enjoyed a lot of popularity with all walks of life. However, the breed lost this notoriety during the World Wars, a time at which almost all breeders abandoned their dog for several reasons. It was not until 1980 that the breeding of this canine breed regained ground. Around the 2000s, having one even became very fashionable.
